I've fully upgraded all of them and the primary difference between them is the alternative fire mode are burst for the elite weapons instead of full auto for the standard weapons. To your second point, the elite combat rifle and pistol actually do not have higher damage per bullet numbers than the regular ones. Tapping burst repeadetly on a target wastes ammo though and leads to more frequent reloading, often at inopportune moments, as in "I need only one more burst to down that target before he hits the alarm, but oh noes, I have to reload!"ĭuring my playthroughs I found that automatic weapons did not waste as much ammo as the burst fire, and due to their higher ammo capacities, I rarely ecountered a situation where I ran out of of ammo just before some enemy hit the alarm. The elite combat rifle and pistol also have way higher damage per bullet. Originally posted by Vassago Rain:Weapons with burst modes can be tapped repeatedly for incredibly high rates of fire. Jensen's fists and Tesla Augment are better, respectively. All the rest are gimmicks, especially the stun gun and tranq rifle. If anyone is playing through this game for the first time or two and wondering which weapons to keep or discard, keep the basic pistol, full auto, sub-machine gun, full auto and the combat rifle, full auto. Burst weapons do not cut it in this game for that purpose. The idea is to down the target without them alerting their squad. None of the Elite weapons will down an enemy in one burst, and there isn't generally time to burst a second time before Jensen is aquired and soon dead. Speaking of burst fire, that's exactly why the elite weapons are inferior- they don't have a full auto mode. Burst fire does not 'stun lock' the enemy, and if the target lives through the burst, he'll run to an alarm faster than Jensen can reaquire him. Do not use the burst fire mode on the sub, because you'll regret it. The best weapon for close range is the sub-machine gun, for the same reason as above- stun lock on full auto. It usually doesn't take more than 3 or 4 rounds. The combat rifle, on the other hand, sort of 'stun locks an enemy' with round after round until he's dead. The Lancer with a silencer is horrible in comparison because it doesn't always down the target in one shot, and if it doesn't, then the target can recover and run to an alarm, faster than Jensen can fire a follow-up shot. After careful observation and evaualution of the performance of each weapon in action, the very best weapon in this game for medium to long range engagement is the commonly available combat rifle.Įven for discreet sniping, there is no beating the combat rifle with a silencer on full auto. I have to say that I've used and fully upgraded every single weapon over and again, including the pre-order Elite weapons. Sooo, I'm on my 9th or so run through the game, still searching for that elusive Foxiest of the Hounds trophy.
